4.1 Investigating Circles

Focus: Measure both the radius and the diameter and
discover their relationship.

A circle is an enclosed curve.
All points on a circle are the same distance from the center of the circle.
A radius represents the distance from the circle center to the circle's edge.
radii is the plural form of radius.
A diameter is any line from 1 side of the circle, to the other......but must pass through the center of the circle.
2 radii equal 1 diameter. (2r = 1d)




Explore - p. 130

A. Construct a Circle with a radius of 4 cm. Label
the radius, and explain how you made the circle.
B. Construct a circle with a diameter of 7 cm.
Label your circle and explain it's construction.
C. Construct a circle with a radius of 10 cm. Do
not use a compass. Explain your strategy.
D. Construct a circle, but do not mark the circle
centre. Cut out the circle. Explain how you
could find the circle's centre.

Acadian Deportation

The Deportation

The Deportation, was the ethnic cleansing of the Acadian population from Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and Cape Breton between 1755 and 1763.

The relationship between the French and the English had always been filled with animosity.
British worry Acadians will be disloyal, tried to make them swear an oath or be deported.

1755 - That year, the British attacked the French Fort Beauséjour during the beginnings of a major military offensive to gain greater control of the continent.
Within the walls of the fort, 300 Acadians were found. Despite claims that they had been forced to take up arms against their will, the discovery completely eroded British trust of the Acadians.

Lawrence was raging mad over the amount of Acadians who had rallied to Beausejour’s defense.
Lawrence said, “Their pretending to have been taken forced to take up arms is an insult upon Common Sense.” “The Acadians will prove for ever a Thorn in our Side.”
He made sure that London found out about the 300 Acadians present at the Fort

Governor Lawrence gave the Acadians one last opportunity to swear allegiance to the British Crown. The Acadians again refused, believing that this demand was no different than ones made over the past few decades.

The British response was swift and unforgiving.
Before 1755 was over, an estimated 6,000 Acadians - approximately three-quarters of their total population - were rounded up as prisoners and forced onto ships. Nearly half would die en route.

Focus - Solve problems involving percent to 100%

Remember..."of" means multiply

Whenever you see "of" replace it with X

A snow board regularly sells for $399.95.
On Saturday, the snow board will be on sale for 30% off.


Answer the following questions:

What is the sale price of the board?
How much money will you save if you buy the board on sale?
What is the total cost of the board, on sale, if you add in the G.S.T. ? (5%)

How much money will you save if you buy the board on sale?

$399.95. x 0.30 =

What is the sale price of the board?

399.99 - =
(answer from above)

What is the total cost of the board ,on sale, if you add in the G.S.T. (5%) ?

x 0.05 =

Then, add the value of 5% to the sale price.

OR..... x 1.05 =
